Pasta Zanmai..

Published by Coconutkun under on 10/30/2009 07:31:00 AM
Yeah! Three birthdays at the same restaurant.. only @ different outlets..one in MidValley, another in 1U..there is suppose to be a third one @ Waterfront, Desa Park, but there are no records on that..So, first up is Pasta Zanmai @ MidValley.. i wont compare the outlets between the three since they're basically the same; only at different places..probably the ambiance at MV scores high points since it 'feels' cozy and comfortable..anyway, we got VIP seats by sheer crowd so technically, it has to be better right?..we had window seats which overlooked the Federal Highway that day and it so happened that the Teoh Beng Hock protests were at its heights in KL during that time..it was great having a peaceful dinner with friends behind glass windows while outside, it was havoc with traffics jams, anti-protest trucks and police vehicles all ..madness..

For me, Pasta Zanmai ranks top on my list for events like bdays basically the food is great! and no.2, their desserts look yummy...and tastes yummy..youll find everyone delighted when with their food no matter what they order, comparing it with one another and at the back of their minds thinking, i have to try this one the next time i come back...the place is a lil crowded during dinner with price range from abt 16 to 32 per plate..slightly pricey but for the whole package;ambiance, tasty food, delightful array of desserts to choose from etc. etc. i think its worth it..

My second attempt at Pasta Zanmai's in 1U turned out pretty successful too..we had a large crowd but with no VIP seats..but hey, coming in a group always turns heads and attention..I noticed something peculiar about Zanmai's dishes this time, which is, telur mata kerbau seems to be quite frequently found in their dishes, be it, ramen and rice, and even their pizza too (view the collages)..judging from the name, i think you'd probably guessed that its a japanese restaurant.. it is ..However, unlike typical jap restaurants, this place boast desserts that comes so hard to resist ..the best part is, the desserts come exactly as seen in the pictures of the menu..

Back to the main course, among all the dishes we ordered, there was this one dish which really intrigued me..it was a pitch black noodle which most of the guys described it as being squid's ink sauce..I am still trying to verify tht, wondering whtr the guys were joking..but come to think of it, its true..there is such thing as squid ink noodles; in which the base of the sauce is made from non other than real squid's ink..cool!..the noodles tasted nice but the more fun part was actually using it to draw pictures on our serviettes..100% utilisation of the sauce..(view picture on the right ---> look at how creative we were)..eating the noodles was another issue as well; its a daunting task eating without touching your lips (it stains)..and dont smile while eating >.< ..

Lastly, wishing all the birthday girls a happy birthday namely: Sarah (my twin), Devin (Tai ka che) and Yee Leng (Mushtaro)

Pandamaran A Bak Kut Teh

Published by Coconutkun under on 10/28/2009 09:33:00 PM
Bak kut teh in Klang? I cant really read chinese, so pandai-pandai lah see the picture at the upper right and cari the place ya..What i can tell you is that the restaurant is located opposite Pandamaran A school in Pandamaran, Klang..i think this place is quite well known since a few ppl could instantly relate to this restaurant when i mention the school..Thanks to Zach for the recommendation, we had bak kut teh early in the morning before we went for Skytrex that day..

The thing i really liked about this bak kut teh is that the soup is really light yet full of flavour..i think im slowly getting the skill of evaluating bak kut tehs..I have never seen bak kut tehs with cauliflower and quail bird egg before..so here is one..but its a real neat combination.. In addition to having great tasting bkt, this place has surprisingly no crowd..mungkin orang belum discover kut..which is a good thing since you can chill and enjoy your morning with a hot pot of bkt and chinese tea in peace..this is real classic..

SKYTREX, Bukit Cahaya

Published by Coconutkun under on 10/26/2009 09:32:00 PM
Waterfall, jungle, hill, waterfall, jungle, hill..tak bosan ke? So, we visited ports and beach lohh T.T"..now what? Thank God we had an activity planned out and booked about one month ahead of us (we gathered 25 of us for this activity)..and the time has come for us to go for it.. its got something to do with trees and jungle but the difference is, this time we travel from treetop to treetop..cool huh? but doesnt that sound like FRIM's 20ft-above-ground-250m-long canopy walk?..well, err, yea but no..FRIM wan was walking from tree to tree across suspended bridges..This one involved flying fox, swinging acts, balancing on ropes, 'monkey bar'ing and some other obstacle course which i cannot describe it with words..lol..So basically its an obstacle course la, but factoring in FUN, you forget that it's an obstacle course anyway..as usual, i forgot to intro that this place i was referring to is Skytrex..is it safe to say that its one of its kind in Malaysia? Well, at least, i think it is..
So here we are at Bukit Cahaya doing Skytrex, little did we know we signed up for the extreme package..meaning its the hardest of the package they offer ..gosh!..Having no prior experience, first, climbing a few ladders to get up the platform that was 20 ft high was one thing..jumping off the ledge flying fox style for the first time is another ..Is it dangerous? Of course it is!..of course, all safety equipments and briefings/training were provided..but still, have heard stories of some smart alec who made the jump without checking his equipment..check your fastenings properly!

Basically, you have safety harness which goes around your waists and between your legs..This has gotten the all the guys comparing each others' somewhat strangled crotch..a lil uncomfortable but it was great fun to make fun each other's..the girls however, didnt seem to have any problem though..darn..extending from the harness are Karabiner hooks which are constantly hooked on to safety wires which holds ya; just in case you fall..Well, talking about dangling on ropes, i had the privilege of being stuck in the middle of a 100ft flying fox swing..although a little embarressing, i have never felt my life dangling on a piece of a rope..yikes, dont look down -but hey, dont worry..its really safe ya, the wires can tahan wan..managed to catch one of my stunts on cam too! check out the vid below (its hard carrying a cam on one hand while the other grabbing the rope, so appreciate this vid la sikit ya). As for those really afraid of heights, pls don't go or chicken out at the ayam exit (lit. meaning 'chicken' exit)..but once you chicken out, your journey ends there..

For those having the intention to go, this place is highly recommended..but choose the correct difficulty lo...they have intermediate and for children as well..but even though ours was the hardest, its not that difficult la come to think of it..just will sakit-sakit badan after the whole event..my advice:train your upper body strength a little before you go..carry light (you be given a strap to carry just your water bottle and nothing else)...carry compact cams instead of SLRs..get ready RM40 per pax and RM3 for gloves and RM3 for Bukit Cahaya entrance fee and RM 'forgot-how-much' for locker rental..the RM 40 is paid in advance ya, when you do your booking..and youre set to go..all events are halted during rainy days and please leave about half day free for this event..a memorable and fun experience..

Kedai Makanan Seremban

Published by Coconutkun under on 10/18/2009 10:21:00 PM
Cont'd from previous article..so, our westport trip was a total failure..there was no sand, polluted sea, no sunset and/or girls..just alot of mat rempits, anglers and malay couples dating..So i admit, Westport was a bad substitue for Port Dickson ><..What's next? Go to the real Port Dickson lohh.. Yup, we went to Port Dickson. afew weeks after our Westport trip.. Well, PD isnt that all great actually, if not, i'd be posting up loads of pictures on that..But here's one picture of the sunset which i managed to capture on my cam (pic to the left). nice mah?.. Results on 4 criteria evaluation? (1) Sea? PASS; (2) Sand? PASS; (3) Sun? PASS and (4) Girls? PASS lo cos i saw 2 japanese girls who really made my day..LOL..Well, i was pleasantly surprised that Port Dickson is quite clean now although previously i have heard quite a number of rumours saying that it's badly polluted..Unlike the yesteryears, boat operators have now come into the picture, so youll have rides like bananaboat, jetski and motorboat (is that a good thing?)..Facing the Melaka Straits, the waters in PD is calmer (unlike its east counterpart), so it is relatively safer for kids; which of course makes PD a spot for family gatherings during holidays and weekends..damn, i hate the crowds..Evenso, strolling down the crowded beach, you somehow get the sense of calmness.. Something only beaches have Another sentence that sounds wrong..

Enough said of PD, on our way back to Klang, we headed down to Seremban for dinner..this part, ill make it real short cos i duno where the heck am i..i just noe the food was nice, thanks to KH for the recommendation.. Probably you could just Google up Kedai Makanan Seremban for details and do your homework (what a lame name for a restaurant)..What i do noe was that the fish was awesome (butter fish) and that the BBQ crab was real succulent and juicy..really fat chunky BBQ crabs layered with secret recipe black sweet sauce..really great.. and you dont get any fatter crabs in town than here man..two thumbs up..

Coconut Flower Seafood restaurant..

Published by Coconutkun under on 10/08/2009 10:01:00 PM
Many dont know this but Port Klang actually consists of South, North and Westports..Me and the guys were here to check out Westports one day..Initially KH wanted to bring me to Port Dickson to view the beach., but that's like two hours away...so friggin' jauh, so i suggested an alternative ie. to check out Westports instead...got sea also mah..to our dismay (and as probably predicted), Westport is such a lousy subsitute..LOL..sorry loh..So, we're done with Southport and Northport; remember Bagan1? that was Northport..Westport leh? Sad to say, there is nothing here!.. except for one day, we decided to give this place another try and discovered that there was paintball (article on tht coming soon..cross fingers).. and probably some neat fishing spots as well. Collage: Taken at one of the piers in Westports

Well if youre heading to Westports for whatever reason, and using the KESAS highway, pls don't fail to notice the exit which says Telok Gong..If you bypass this, you're probably missing one of the seafood havens in Klang.. I think many ppl will noe this one..Its gotta be Coconut flower Seafood Restaurant right? True but not true also..personally, id recommend somewhere else in Telok Gong that has better seafoodbut that'll be in another article..For now, lets just settle for Coconut Flower..To get there, exit off the KESAS highway into Telok Gong..Travel about 2km inwards and look out for signboard on the left with leads you directly to the restaurant. ..For my review this time, honestly, its just ma ma tei (average) only. We were super hungry at that time, and usually, food will taste extra good when youre hungry, right? Well, that wasnt the case that day..mayb because of the lala mei fun which failed miserably..other dishes such as the crab and prawns were ok oni.. as they say lah, the more commercialized/popular a place gets, the complaisant they become ..that's the case for our fren here..The food here scores slightly above average for main dishes like prawns and crabs..Did we order the wrong dishes? We'll do away with the verdict this time since we only tried 5 dishes..but i think a plus factor for this place is probably its open-air coconut trees + little huts feel..you could alse choose the rumah panjang (long house) which i thought was really unique..so, judging from that, its gotta be a night/dinner event ya.. describing the place a little more, the place is a little secluded actually...but no worries la, got hundreds of ppl eating here at any one time..rumours has it that a bunch of robbers once robbed this place..customers were forced to queue up and hand in their valueables..after that incident, the robbers came back! this time, the chefs were prepared..the came rushing out with their cleavers..the incident din occur anymore though..the robbers were scared the shit out themselves

Ampang Yong Tau Foo

Published by Coconutkun under on 10/06/2009 06:54:00 AM
When i was first brought to Ampang..the first thing that came into my mind was to try their Yong Tau Foo; since this place was so famous for it..On reaching Ampang, you'd be amazed at how YTF outlets there are..Of course, my first reaction was to head to the more commercialized ones; the ones with larger, more colourful billboards, larger crowds ..my friend pulled me back..err, we're going to this one (seen here in the pic).."err, wokiee"..My opinion of this place (the food esp) isnt that great actually, since for me, all yong tau foo tastes somewhat the same..it wasnt until the second time that we came here that one of our guests commented, "wow, this is the best yong tau foo on earth"...i was like "really meh? "(scrambling to take another piece, chewing it slowly and trying to tune my mind that this was the greatest yong tau foo in town..)..lol..peer pressure mah..

One thing unique about this place is the way orders are made.. You head to the counter with a rough list (of food) of what you have in mind and place your order (plus your table number) to the person there ..once your order is finalised and stuff, your order is put thru a microphone which is amplified on speakers throughout the whole restaurant..Basically, the whole restaurant knows what you're ordering..There isnt much to ponder about on what to order actually, since your choices are: how many pieces of yong tau foo mix(mixture of yong tau foo types you want); pcs soup sui gao; pcs of fried dumpling; how many bowls of rice/noodles-soup or dry.

I think the thing that sets this place apart is the ingredients they use in their yong tau foo..one prominent taste is the coriander aka cilantro aka chinese parsley ingredient which they put into the fillings (of the dumpling)..deh, those little green stuff commonly found in some of those chinese soups and steamed fish..I know, some of you hate that taste since the herb tastes a lil pungent.. But for the rest, i think this place is worth recommending since everyone likes the yong tau foo here (i am neutral on this one)..the crowd is always huge so, you have to trust the crowd..
