Fraser's Hill

Published by Coconutkun under on 7/28/2009 10:00:00 PM
Now that I've got your attention, time to head to Frasers.. our journey began with a healthy wholesome breakfast that day..Dim Sum at Kepong(is dim sum healthy?)..recommended by our local guy, KH, it seems that this place is the best around town..Ful Lai is the name to remember..but heck, the waiters here speak some kind of Chinese that none of us understand..luckily, most of the orders are done by pointing..else, its gonna be pretty hard..

We took a slow and easy drive that day, taking us about an hour plus to reach Frasers..i think we sampaied somewhere around 11 ..Surprisingly, Frasers is still cold leh..fresh air was mostly present along the way..the rest smelled like monkey dung sebab ada monyet berak kan..overall the air still fresh and cold lo..fresher than any part of KL to the very least.. During the journey, we bumped into dozens of monkeys and birds..One things for sure, Frasers is a place well known bird watching..some come from as far as UK and Japan..crazy fellows..haha..Unfortunately, bird photo shooting is outta my league unless someone can sponsor me to buy RM 10k camera lenses..But we did spot quite a few birds -lil wild parrots and robins..sweet~

Second, Frasers is popular for its old British buildings..I think the Brits during the ol' days of spice trade , bijih timah and all those history crap couldnt tahan Malaysia's hot weather . This was their breakaway.. For golfers, i think this place isn't bad too..air conditioned golfing..who wouldn't like that..

So we were here at Frasers after our plan to go to the Zoo failed miserably (else, you'd be seeing pictures of caged animals now)..but i'd think that it was a blessing in disguise, we had a great time ..A little hike..nice but expensive lunch (ol' english style)..down to the lake/river for a splash..great food for dinner..almost prefect~..(Acknowledgment: Thanks Lern for driving us around).. Why almost perfect? cos the hiking and the waterfall disappointing; hence, no photos was taken..hiking in Frasers might be a little bit colder than other forests we've been, which makes things a little pleasant, but there's really nothing much to see actually..We took the Bishop's trail, going a little further up Maxwell's...we got bored half way and decided to get outta the forest (squirming with leeches - i got my first bite here cos i wasnt expecting them; usually id take precautions)..We headed to down Ye' Olde Smoke House (YOSH) for lunch..which was a real nice place- worth mentioning, worth going..This place is designed like an old English Cottage (as seen in the collages) but its nothing more than a hotel actually..if my memory serves me right, i think its RM 302 min. per nite..And look what i did here; edited a photo of Ming taken at the smoke house - made it look antique..cool huh? ..Oh ya, this place has other branches as well in Cameron and in KL.. anyone been there, pls feedback =)

So after YOSH, we went to a nearby waterfall which was about 20 minutes drive down the narrow road..Gasp! pls dont go there!..super polluted..the worse is the waterfall; you have a whole bunch of ppl bathing upstream and yet, there are people bathing happily at the waterfall downsteam..yucks..C'mon, there might be ppl even peeing and washing their armpits up there..the water is murky and there is frothing bubbles at the side..Urghhh! Okie, enough said...Let's get back to something pleasant..Here are more pictures of the interior of Ye Olde Smoke House..Nice? Happy viewing... = )

Remember the time that i mentioned a beautiful dam just before reaching Chilling..This is IT!..Introducing....Empangan Selangor located in Hulu Langat, just after Kuala Kubu Bahru..We werent heading to Chilling waterfalls that day however..instead, this was the beginning part of our trip to Frasers...

Damn, i miss those days when i was in Puchong..That was when i had the opportunity to try out places, yet i didnt cos my company provided us with free food at the cafeteria..Now that i am I am posted to Port Klang, gone are the chances..all those FOOD...Noooo!!..

So anyway, here is one place that I did manage to go before i left for Port Klang..This place in Puchong was said to be famous for thier roast chicken..We ordered roast pork, chicken and duck that day..unfortunately..hmm..okok oni..mayb we set out expectations too high...and unfortunate for this restaurant, we had 3 food critics that day..But giving this fellow a chance, i think ill give this place some plus points for their crispy duck skin..yummiee~...and the girls that works here (i think is the owner's daughter) is pretty too...Weee~

"I still miss Kong Kee duck and Maybank Chicken rice...."

Gunung Datuk

Published by Coconutkun under on 7/21/2009 08:07:00 PM
Gunung Datuk...Initially, we were told that we were going to climb Gunung Botak(Bald Mountain) ; which got us a little curious-since Googling it yielded zero hits..could it be an uncharted territory..a place that only a few know? But, manalah tahu, we were heading to Gunung Datuk that day..its not that we have been here nor was it dissapointing..but okie la, its was quite a good climb.. I would rate this place difficult though..Two hours of pure up hill climb..flat terrain are short lived and just as youre about to breath a sigh of relief, there is more to go..just up up and up all the way..of course, when coming down, its down down all la..this really hurts your joints real baddd..might sound abit discouraging for first timers but seriously, here is not a good place to start..but if you really want to, go slow lo..take real small steps at a time..Anyway, the name Gunung Datuk which literally means Grandpa's Mountain, might get ya a little intimidated..cant you beat a grandpa's mountain?
Pic: Horny hornet

Here's the plus side of Gunung Datuk..the scenery is awesome..you could see the whole state of Negeri Sembilan and even up to Melaka on a clear day..how cool is that..its a mountain by the way, not a hill..Besides that, i think this is the only climb where i get to see wildlife..seriously..throughout my other climbs at other places, i have never been to a place where you can see wildboars, gibbons and hornbills throughout the journey..You dont have to worry about these creatures though..they are more afraid of us than we are of them..Again, I have a never been to a forest with so many squeling monkeys (i mean wild monkeys, not my team mates) ..On the day of our climb, we also stumbled across furry caterpillars as long as your average pen and weird little bugs...Another plus point is the spring water which is located not far for the peak (first time drinking spring water which was really refreshing)

Note: Heard that its pantang to bring pork up this mountain..The last part of the mountain is a flight of man made iron stairs which gets u up to the rocky peak..Gotta be careful of that cos a slip might just cost u a life..few hundred metres down..

Petaling Street

Ok, let's not scare everyone with all the temples and stuff..cos this blog isnt about religion..its about travel and food...Petaling Street..never have i been here so early in the morning..just look at the street..so little people..Well, Petaling street has always been a Night kinda street..Morning is the least, afternoon gets a little more crowded and at night, super squeezy...Night's the time where all the stalls come out..you name it..Gucci bags, Rolexes, Perfumes, DVDs, printed Ts of any sorts (ori or not, that's another question)..@ Petaling street, the first thing youve gotta know is to bargain..or else, dont buy..and my definition of bargain is bringing the price down to as low as 40-70% down (depends on the items la)..no kidding..Other than that, from young, we were told to watch out wallets and valuables whenever we go jalan2 here..There are pick pockets..anyway, which Chinatown in any country wouldnt have pick pockets..

From my perspective, id classify Petaling street into 3 parts..First is their main street.. this is where youll find all your Rolexes and stuff like that that i mentioned..Its also the place where u can find great mua ci (ma ji as seen in pic)..large siew bao....roast duck and siew yuk...and great air mata kucing and soy bean drinks too..Id recommend you guys to try their mua ci, so go and seek for this stall..Unlike the typical ones that come in only the original flavour, which is no flavour, this one has 6 flavours to choose from. And unlike those that sell other flavours other than the original, i think this wan is nicer that those..LOL..What makes this one so popular is because of its texture..its extra chewy.."dont ever put your muaci in the fridge!", the auntie advises..

The second part of Petaling street is there their wet market/morning market which opens in the morning; its tucked somewhere around the corner (just ur typical wet morning market..except they sell weird stuff like cat meat...urghh...and the market is abit "dark" too..din take picture of the wet market cos nothing nice to snap)...and the third would be the Hawker street seen here at the last pic...this hawker street is famous for their yong tau fu..assam laksa and curry mee..Super recommended cos i fell in love with these three dishes here..except this place is very crowded and youre practically eating by the side of the drain..not a good place for a date if you know what i mean..

Temples around Petaling Street

Published by Coconutkun under on 7/12/2009 11:51:00 AM
Its really truly amazing that in a big city like KL, you have those little little temples thriving here and there (probably utilizing some shop lots space)..You pass by every single day, its existence hardly captures your attention..you hardly even thought of giving it a peep to see whats in there..i was truly astonished when i was brought to 2 of these old temples here;near Petaling street..When i entered, i just stopped and gasped(feeling a little shocked)..and really, the culture here is truly to be admired..Well, you dont have to be a chinese to admire, but it think its really interesting...The first temple, in which i'd recommend is shown in the sequence of 7 photographs below..The second temple which is not at nice as the first one is collaged as a single photo (the last photograph)..Have fun viewing..

A trip down KL for..

Published by Coconutkun under , on 7/08/2009 08:20:00 PM

A trip down KL for...a morning jog and breakfast? That's insane..yes, i know it is..more reasons we should do it!..Perhaps KL isn't the best place for a healthy jog..but for a change, why not? i think it was a great trip that day, jogging right in the middle of the metropolitan city.. KLCC was selected as our jogging spot that day..i think most of you know that there's a park right in front of KLCC right?.. The park is so so lahh..sufficient amenities to accommodate our needs for a lil' jog that day..We used to, and always have been, jogging at places surrounded by trees.. but this time, it was surrounded by buildings; concrete jungle..Something different loh.. I think everyone should try it..Biasalah ppl get used to the hustle bustle of city life..all they think about is shopping, clubbing, crowds and traffic jams..but early in the morning, its so quiet here..the city is just waking up..and this my dear friends, has a charm of its own..its a view of the city from a different perspective.. Well, to complete our trip that day, it wouldnt be so without some nice wholesome breakie at some ol' parts of KL (we do it old town style). Thanks to KH for the recommendation, we went to Yut Kee which is famous for like almost everything they sell there..lol..their Hokkien mee is nice, the pork and chic chops are nice, they sell half boil kampung chicken eggs. Their toast is superb cos of their kaya (its own made)..and they make nice marble/butter cakes too..so biasalah, we ordered everything that's popular there..i think we left out a few; thats for you to find out ; ). Our trip didnt just end there, next we went to Petaling Street; thats in the next article..see you there..
