Restoran Hock Lay (KKB)

Published by Coconutkun under on 6/30/2009 08:01:00 PM

Everyone knows that when youre at KKB, you've gotta try their famous loh mien (pls see above)..as usual, yellow noodles is a no no for me..whatmore with vinegar..yucks..but WAIT! don't get this wrong..the restaurant posted here is NOT the right place to have the famous KKB loh mien...we went to the wrong place!..but its a wrong place that's worth going to! Not for their loh mien of course, but for thier cu cha (dishes cooked by the chef)...the restaurant?..is Restoran Hock Lay...

This is also the place where i gained my signature of way of ordering-"Just give me everything that is special here!"...This is how u do it using this simple 2-step process..Step 1:you ask the waiter for their signature dish or their special/famous dish..Step 2: you then order everything he/she recommends..There are several constraints/assumptions you have to consider when using this technique though. Of course when u assume, u make an ASS out of U and ME (ASS-U-ME), sometimes. The first assumption is that the waiter is truthful - you need to see how he answers/describes; you may ask more questions about the dish/probe further to gauge his/her sincerity..this comes with experience..lol ..Also, this technique doesnt work if the waiter answers "Everything is nice here"...Take other considerations when ordering ie. the price of the dish..pictures if any..any promotions..scan around what other ppl are eating..and things like that..

The outcome?? Vualahh!! We ordered these 3 special dishes that day...(1)crab..(2)coconut curry prawn and (3)stout chicken.. The ratings for these dishes are superb..and its affordable too..we ordered other stuff like vege and things like that but no pics taken..

Chilling waterfall (KKB)

Published by Coconutkun under on 6/24/2009 09:55:00 PM
Chilling waterfall - my second time here..this article is dedicated to Lern, the ang mou guy who initiated this trip..its been almost a year since i last came to this fall..its perhaps one of the easiest waterfall to track to and yet the most beautiful one too..hardly unpolluted..but i seem to be seeing bits of scrap during my trip here recently..sighs.. The fun part about tracking to chilling is perhaps the 6 river crossings which u have to make before reaching the falls.. contrary to what ppl might think, it isnt that difficult actually..but i suggest that first timers go with supervision/take precautionary measures..Tracking during rainy season is a definite NO cos water levels rise up quickly whenever it rains..you might find yourself either stranded at any of the crossing (remember there are six crossings) or worse, flushed out of existence! So the rain factor makes it difficult to plan for a chilling trips..you know, the weather can never be predictable.. The water from Chilling makes its way to a water catchment area/resevoir by the way..the resevoir has a fantastic view-ill catch up on that a few articles from this one...

So, back to Chilling, tracking consists alot of attacking ferns..lol...and there is of course the 6 river crossings (see pic above)..The fact that the journey here needs river crossing is in fact a slight deterrent for ppl to come..which is great! why? - no pollution. In addition NO camping and fishing are allowed here..it is indeed tempting to fish here cos there are tons of fish, Kelah breed..interestingly, the fish can jump from lower cascade levels to the higher ones, against the current..just like what salmons do in the epic migratory upstream.

About the location, Chilling falls is located at Kuala Kubu Baru...somewhere on the way to Fraser's Hills.. i like this place alot...as in KKB..wide serene view of the reservoir at the foothills..fresh and cooling waterfall retreat along the way..and cool relaxing Fraser's Hill on top...but dont expect to cover all of them within a day..its not possible..Here are some photos for the record..Enjoy!

Cheong Foh, Klang

Published by Coconutkun under on 6/20/2009 07:54:00 PM
Well, if Ipoh has its own brand of coffee...so does Klang! Klang Boleh!! I am not an avid fan of caffeine until quite recently actually (about 2 years ago when i started my MBA). That's when the Starbucks thingy all started.. but i consider myself still a light drinker - a cup or two day..and i have gotten accustomised to the taste..last time i used to get a little dizzy when its a thick brew..

The famous Klang coffee comes under the brand name of Cheong Foh. They have one outlet near the old Ocean shopping center in Klang(that's the original one)..while the new one (seen here in the pic) is located at Jalan Kim Chuan opposite the Sekolah Teknik Vokasional.. We (the guys and i) are finding ourselves coming here quite often these days (the new outlet).. we like the breakie they serve here..Their original outlet in Klang town doesnt sell the same food but its altogether same same nice..So things you should look for at their new outlet is (1) their coffee loh; (2) their kaya is home made which mean u oughtta go for their toast, (3) tai poh mee is nice and (4) their nasi lemak in the morning is so sinful..

LONG LIVE CAFFEINE!!

Fong Lye,The Gardens MV

Published by Coconutkun under on 6/17/2009 08:02:00 PM
9th May 2009 i had the honour to makan with Meitheen.. fuyoh, i remembered the date! haha..thats because this special guest of mine is my mandarin teacher!..Back then, i think Farhad and I were the only weirdos to enrol in Mandarin class for degree students~sesat..but I scored 88% for the exam o! haha.

Pic: Meitheen has a hard time deciding...

So after a casual movie that day, we decided to makan at Fong Lye Restaurant, The Gardens MidValley to "catch up" sort of thingy. Fong Lye is neat!.. Nice clean white ambiance..Super packed with ppl...The turnover's is great but there are some drawbacks ..Food was served quite fast (its a good thing but somehow doesnt feel right)..Second, tables are too close to each other(its like almost sitting beside a stranger on the same table)..and lastly, youll feel guilty/pity while eating cos there are tons of ppl waiting outside..But hey, everything becomes seconds when the food tastes good~you know that you cant go wrong here. I need to discover more on the menu of this restaurant..everything looks nice.Oh ya, ill never forget the chopsticks here too..I dropped them 3 times! wth..Talk about the design..the chopsticks are wooden and their ends have heavy metal pieces attached to them..what's the purpose? These chopsticks slide off your bowl on their own.Moving chopsticks!..the waiter seemed pissed..lol..Sowiieee~

So, Fong Lye is one nice place to makan..Next is desserts! This is NOT found in Fong Lye ya..haha..its found in stall located somewhere in the middle of the underground walkway that connects MV and the Gardens. Its the durian kuih! Its really yummy cos real durian fillings are used..and there is cream in it!...for durian lovers, this is recommended..This stall sells very sinful tiramisu too..its packed with cream..so try to check that one out too..I have heard that a similar stall sell this kind of thing at Amcorp mall..but i cant verify that yet..

Note: MBA 07/08 FT, convocation's this August o

Pei Fook wan tan noodles

Published by Coconutkun under on 6/17/2009 07:22:00 PM
So the finger foods + the Lo Lo and desserts is 1 makan outing..where is the other makan outing?.. I forgot to mention...BEHOLD!! Pei Fook, the wan tan mee specialist... if you recalled my article on wan tan mee, i dislike this noodle because of the gan sui mei (literally the asid boric smell..haha)..but heck, ever since i have been eating high standard wan tan mee (from shops that specialise in wan tan mee), my perception towards the noodle has somewhat changed.. Now, i have standards..haha.. ill give this place two thumbs up for making me like something that i have always been skeptical with..the texture(of the noodles) is nice, the sauce is nice, the taste is nice, the char siew is nice, price nice..everything pass! ..err, drink not so nice..How come get so high marks ah the noodle? that because everything is own made! raises eyebrows?..Well, to me, this fellow is damn keng..cheers..

"Further down Menjalara" place..

Published by Coconutkun under on 6/16/2009 07:56:00 PM

Mana makan? After each outdoor outing, there is always a makan outing..This time around, we had two makan outings after one outdoor outing..Talk about greed!..and because we were in KH's territory (in Kepong, after our FRIM trip), we had the privilege to follow him around go the best makan places that day..It was at a place called "further down Menjalara".. talk about my blogging skills~it sucks..haha...cant give directions for ppl to find the place.. but i think this place doesnt need much introduction..its well known in and around Klang Valley for their Lo Lo (fruit flavoured ice)..they have their outlets in ss2 near Maybank as well.. but the place at Kepong here is where it all began..i have been eating Lo Lo as long as i can remember; but i didn't know Lo Lo was called Lo Lo until one of the my gal friends wanted to tapau Lo Lo at a Lo Lo stall while we were at Serdang pasar malam about a year ago lohhh..Lol

So, besides Lo Lo, this place serves other sweet desserts such as peanut paste soup and water chestnut soup.. Usually, these desserts are served hot..Eeww~..sounds so healthy and seemed like those food that only pregnant women eat..lol.. The stall next door sells equally great food but they are more focused on fried stuff and finger food..I don't really know what i was eating that day other than that siew mai..but everything tasted great..

I was chatting with a friend of mine yesterday and she said that it was a mental torture to view my blog - so many pictures of good food, no opportunity to eat T.T"..Poor thing~..Hence i hereby give formal warning to view this blog at your own RISK..lol...try licking the screen for some taste >.<
