Axian dim sum

Published by Coconutkun under on 3/30/2010 10:06:00 PM
I think im gonna claim the title of dim sum king soon..more dim sum articles coming up but so far, we are benchmarking dim sums we go try out against the one found here in Axian dim sum..so, Axian sets the standards..i think the dim sum here is great..but so is the price..so coming here in group in good since economies of scale applies..i think..LOL...Okie, as far as the food is concerned, i wouldnt comment on the individual items, since i cant really remember..this event has been quite a while now..but what i do remember is that overall, the dim sum is really good..I think the xiao long bao and some prawn salad thingy is good..So, two thumbs up to da place...Located in Bandar Puteri in Puchong, this place is owned and named after, i would presume a famous tv show host ,called Axian.. Well, i understand that this guy hosts a show that introduces Malaysian food in Astro channel.. Pretty neat but i dont have Astro so wth..As usual, this place is super crowded in the mornings..probably up to extent you need to wait to be seated..

Tamarind Hills, Jalan Sultan Ismail

Published by Coconutkun under on 3/29/2010 10:57:00 PM

Well, this goes against the norm..usually id post articles of lapuk events..this one is pretty recent actually..in conjunction with Lern's Bday just few days ago we were here at Tamarind Hills Kay Elle..Located opposite Concorde Hotel @ Jalan Sultan Ismail..Some will tell your it's located opposite Equatorial..some will say its near Hard Rock..and even a secluded alley just beside Caltex..dont listen to em'..LOL..its directly opposite Concorde..Beside what seems to be the biggest KFC building ive ever seen..LOL..Wisma KFC!

I give this place superb ratings for the ambiance..love it..there are two seatings; outdoor and indoor..outdoor is okiee, however, given Malaysian weather..the humidity is well err..uncomfortable to some extent..factor in mosquitoes and id recommend indoors anytime..mat sallehs on the other hand somehow loved the outdoor..i dont mind getting bitten in jungles but not at a place im paying RM 50 and above/pax meal..

Well, if youre looking at the food pictures, the place serves contemporary Thai and Burmese cuisine..If you're wondering what "contemporary" meant..it actually means that the food here have characteristics of present day/modern thai/burmese recipes..adapted and changed to suit present day living or lifestyle i presume..portions are small and putting it in apek terms, its basically a high class tai-chau (big chinese fry-up) style restaurant cum bar as well...We tried their beef, duck, chicken and lamb that day, and each having their distinct, unique flavour which makes this whole thing pretty interesting..Thumbs up to this place...We were here in a group of 5 guys and a girl, but really, this place is suitable for a one on one date ; )

Restaurant Yap Beng..

We all know Klang is the valley of Bak Kut Tehs..when talking about this, places like Taman Intan and under-the-bridge comes to mind (which coincidentally gives me and idea on what to write in articles to come)..However, there is this hidden Bak Kut Teh restaurant located in Pandamaran, off Jalan Kim Chuan road (the feeder road that's in between, two petrol stations; Esso and Shell) that has been keeping a low profile..We all love things that are hidden yet precious..like this one here, this places serves yummy delicious dry Bak Kut Teh that is unlike its 'wet' counterpart, it is spicy and sinful..generous servings of succulent meat with dry cuttlefish strips and chillies that brings out the flavor in em'..woot!..Obviously non-halal..

Second off, there is this intriguing dish that they serve here too ie. baby sharks!..its not uncommon to find this dish actually..since ive got a number of places in my lists that serves this dish..although some will protest against eating em', i think baby sharks dont count right?..well, that's arguable.. they taste just like fish..Then, aside from these two, the rests of the dishes ive tried here are just normal lohh...probably the normal BKT(the typical soup based BKT) might taste just as great, .Not that ive tried it, but a bowl of the BKT soup was served alongside with the dry BKT the other day..Super pekat in flavour and just drinking the soup alone would instantly tell you that their normal (soup based BKT) would taste great.. Other comments include plus points for being a yaw-char-kuey serving BKT restaurant..This restaurant can be pretty packed at times; usually during breakie and lunch..

IKEA..

Published by Coconutkun under on 3/23/2010 10:45:00 PM
We know too well that this Swedish co selling flat pack furniture at affordable prices is the biggest furniture retailer in the world..and for it to be founded by a 17 year old kid? damn, ive wasted so much of my life..

So here i am reviewing about their food..not their furniture..which i think is awesome (both are)..Nowadays i write stuff which i think its well worth mentioning..and not those i dont like or the ones i wanna critic cos its just a waste of time and and the after effect of the tulanness is just not wort h it..LOL..i have standards..fuyoh.. O.o"

So, what ive done here in this article is basically collaging virtually 70 % of the food served here in IKEA..i think i missed out a couple of their sandwiches, raw shrimp and salad thingy..also excluded are their pastries, ice cream and cakes..but dun underestimate their curry puff and ice cream (sold downstairs) and their 'daim " cake even though they are not reviewed in this one..they are awesome!..especially the daim cake..it gets me and crew just going "daim!" (we love to pronounce it as DAMN)..

So, for the 70% of food pixies i have here, i would rate their Swedish meatballs as the best..and it goes perfectly well with their some brown sauce and cranberry sauce..id do away with the cranberry sauce cos i dont like my food to taste sweet..but, its individual preference at the end of the day...Their fried chicken tastes good and same goes to their poached salmon..but i heard that their salmon tasted much better last time with their garlic butter sauce then their current cream sauce..cant verify that for ya..The rests are just a okayy..For me, a plate of meatballs and a cuppa cappuccino here just makes my day..

Kemensah Waterfall..round I, II and III

Published by Coconutkun under on 3/02/2010 11:36:00 PM
You know, at the pace im writing my blog now, im writing so slow that by the time i write about my first time here (here @ Kubang Gajah), i have already visited this place 2 more times already..and it gets more and more interesting every visit..the best part is, you dont have to read three articles about three different visits of the same place..its all compiled into this one..

When i first read about this place in waterfalls of Malaysia, its a bit discouraging to know that the entrance to this place costs a hefty Rm5/person...Now that the place is abandoned, heck its FREE!! For your info, the entrance to the jungle starts from what used to be an UMNO camp retreat..and the greedy unscrupulous guards (prolly Nepalese) imposes an entrance free to which u duno to whom pocket it goes to.. Presently, its great to know that the guards arent there anymore.. But it is also sad to note that such a nice facility is abandoned..

I wouldnt say Kemensah waterfall is a nice waterfall; its just like any other ordinary waterfall but ill tell you why this place got me coming here again and again..to get there, just follow the road just beside zoo negara and keep going on..just keep following the road..dont take any feeder roads..and in doubt, DONT!..; )

Kemensah waterfall is also known as Kubang Gajah and sometimes, the name Laila Sari appears.. Both these names give the place a more 'local' and enchanted feel..but there is a folklore attached to it..It was believed that elephants once used to bathe here (hence the name Kubang Gajah) but if you would have come here, you'd wonder; how the heck did the elephants bathe here? (there is virtually no place to bathe here)...so, for those longing for a swim, you'd be disappointed..there is no pool large enough for even two strokes (or mayb even one)..the name Laila Sari on the other hand, got its name from a girl who had a mishap there..The story goes that she now lives in the water..Ive been told by many that the forest of Kubang Gajah holds many makhluk halus (which means creatures from another dimension)..even my boss told me that when we were having a chat one day..Whether youre a believer or not, its always safer to respect these so called "forces" of the forests..simple things like dont boast, dont simply spit or pluck things etc..youll never noe..

And so, for the reason why i made as much as three visits to the place? thats because there are hidden waterfalls to be discovered here..that makes it even more exciting, doesnt it..But honestly, after my third attempt and finally discovering all the hidden waterfalls, i dont want to come here anymore..LOL..i have enough! in a good way that is...

Well, on your first attempt into the forests of Kubang Gajah, I'd strongly recommend that you first find the Kubang Gajah waterfall itself..its not hard to find since a ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) path charts the course..this makes Kubang Gajah trails a relatively easy 1 hour hike and a no brainer (just follow the trail)..Cant think of any negatives except for the last part which is a steep downward slope..Going down wouldnt be a prob but going up WILL!! (when on your way back), Personally, i think Kubang Gajah waterfall is a great spot some BBQ activity by the steam; which my second trip was tailored to ..oh sorry, the first two waterfall pix (the one with the sun rays) are pictures of the Kubang Gajah waterfall..From the third waterfall pix onwards, what you see are the hidden waterfalls that i mentioned...If you were to check out other blogs/websites, you'd be discouraged to know that the only way to these waterfalls is to actually go against the stream from Kubang Gajah waterfall itself..yep, you make your own paths..a steady 40 minutes of these will then lead you to a Y-junction where the stream splits..following right will lead you to miserable waterfall shown here in waterfall pix number 3..the path on the left on the other hand is another 20 minutes (subjective statement cos it depends on how fast u hike and the group youre bringing) hike which ultimately lands you to a magnificent 8m vertical drop waterfall..but before that, you encounter Lata Gitar (shown as the 4th waterfall pic) and prolly named so because it looks like the fingerboard of a Guitar..both the falls are near each other..

As difficult as the off road course might seem (in fact, it really is), here is the good news..there is a path that actually leads to the hidden waterfall!..so its not so hidden after all!! damn..the problem is, describing to you the path is a little difficult..Here's a tip: If youre following the ATV trail and youre about to reach Kubang Gajah, there is this unused bicycle trail that exits to the left of the ATV trail..take the bicycle trail and endure about nearly an hour of gradual uphill climb..at times i even question the viability of it being a bicycle trail..its more like a torture/pain-in-the-ass trail to me..After hiking for sometime, you need to detour down to your right down a super steep slope..The question as to when to detour is the tricky part..I think two things will give you a hint..first, there is this log that partially blocks the bicycle path..Red white hazard tape tied on shrubs marks the spot where you start to detour and descent down the steep (hardly visible) path to your right..Second, the thunderous roar of the waterfall will definitely signal you to start searching for this hidden path..You cant see the waterfall but you can hear it..If you miss this turning, following the bicycle trail goes on and on to never never land..One group did this and they overshot the waterfall by 3 hours..suckers..haha..so good luck ya ; ) till then, peace..

p/s:well, if you notice the change in quality of the pix, im happy to say that im a proud owner of a new dslr..However, pictures in my articles to come might still feature some taken from IXUS 60

Restaurant Sri Paandi (TTDI)

Published by Coconutkun under on 2/16/2010 11:34:00 PM
Obviously, when u have something like a restaurant name and then followed by its location/branch,you know that this has to be good since its probably the nth outlet branch..the business is probably doing good that they have decided to expand it..then again, i could be wrong..but for this restaurant, it holds true.. Forgive me for my lack of understanding of the Tamil language but doesnt Paandi means...nevermind~..lets head on down to the food review!..

For this article, i'd like to classify banana leaf into two categories: the complete banana leaf and the simple banana leaf..sounds complex? Well, typically banana leaf dishes come in these two variants (i think you'd agree with me, let me explain). The one seen here happens to be the complete variant. For obvious reasons, the banana leaf dish here consists of the full course; you have the normal 3 vege side-dish (typically you'd have cucumber-pineapple-chilli in vinegar, vege cooked with dhal and some curry vege..oh, this wan has a fourth side-dish ie. stir fried vege), 3 different dipping sauce, for the crispies; typically you have papadums (but this one gives dried chilli and chips as well), then there are little extras such as a choice of traditional soups (mooru -seen as white soup i

n the collage and rasam - slightly yellowish clear soup), optional deep fried vege (such as ladies finger and bittergourd) and meats (Curry chicken/mutton/fish or fried chicken/fish)...AND of course all of these go with RICE! We must have rice.. Lastly, for the sweet toothed, there are traditional indian desserts and cakes to savor..it is that COMPLETE!

So, you might be wondering, whats does simple consist of? Well, the one i'd classify simple consist of rice with a choice of curry gravy to go with it, the 3 vege side-dish that i mentioned, pappadums and a choice of meat (chicken/fish/mutton). It is the most basic of how a banana leaf can get.. if you were to compare the complex and the simple banana leaf, if think the complex one has way more stuff to get delighted with..but then again, never underestimate the simple one too, cos i noe of one that is just as great; simple but perfect..an article on the simple banana leaf is coming soon..till then, happy eating..p/s: i was showing this to my VP the other day and he commented that the corner lot sells even better Banana leaf..the name? Devi's corner..need to check that one next!

Pisang waterfall

Published by Coconutkun under on 2/02/2010 11:28:00 AM
Nice? this is coming next...the Banana falls (Pisang waterfalls) aka Longkang Besar (Big Drain) is one of my many memorable trips i have had..Combining good company, a relatively simple hiking trail, nice exquisite forests and a giant longkang (drain), this place is a must visit for all.. Our hiking team seemed satisfied that day and so was our photography crew; for me, i couldn't be any happier..

This time around, two of our pro photographers; Wonderboy and Yellowbanana came along, which made this whole trip a photo shooting frenzy overkill hyper flash ultra modeling kinda outing.. We were practically modelling the whole journey through..felt as though we were stars, celeb or some supermodel or something..Now, youve gotta be really impressed with their shots, their skills are great..But there is also the external factor (the awesomeness factor) that this place is just full of scenic shots just begging for a picture perfect to be taken..couple it with a lil creativity and some remote flashes..wualahh~..As a beginner in photography, i knew that very day, i had to get a external flash A.S.A.P

So, for those that do not know Pisang falls that well, it is that fall which is "located near the highway lahh, dat wan with the big big drain wan"..for me, i'd conveniently call it the twin falls cos its my first time seeing one (as at now, i dont whtr its a twin fall anymore), located somewhere along the Karak Highway, in the region of Gombak. , its like, who would have known that such a nice lil waterfall exist near a major highway which connects East and West of Malaysia..

Well, after writing few articles now (damn, this is my 105th), ive noticed something..i dont tell my viewers the location places..Talking about location, coincidentally my cousins and i were chilling out at desa park just the other day and one of them asked for directions to Quadro..one of my elder guy cousins then replied, staring blankly at the ceiling, "you turn left and right..there is this road, take that!"..Everyone broke into laughter..typical guy or how a guy's brain work.. So, i wont go to the specifics but here's wat i can tell you - follow the sign that leads to Muzium Orang Asli when youre somewhere in the Kepong region.. and if you got that right, you're about 95% there already.. the rest, do your homework..

Back to Pisang, i would say that this place has a rather wide range of biodiversity (not as much as Gunung Datuk which still tops my lists)..I can give you a few examples: Gabunta(anyone watches Naruto?), the huge frog(<--see pic) guards the two tunnels of this place..then, there are numerous occasions of us seeing paw like prints, i hope they are not tigers'..There are alot of fishes at the waterfall and we even saw the Raja Brooke (the famed gigantic Malaysian butterfly..).. Then, there was this rape case that was going on here; and we bumped into the police during our hike who were hunting down the culprit (oh ya, this has nothing to do with biodiversity..lari topic)
